Miami football: 3 former Hurricanes who need an NFL team in 2021
As the NFL offseason continues to roll on, a few Miami football alumni are still trying to figure out where they’ll play football in 2021.
The Miami football factory churns out NFL talent with the best of them. Best of all, those players have a strong record of sticking in the pros.
The question this offseason is what the future holds for a few former Hurricanes who are on the free-agent market.
How much longer will these players have to wait to find a team? Crunch time is approaching.
3 former Miami football players who need an NFL team
3. Duke Johnson
Johnson has been one of the premier pass-catching running backs in the league since he arrived in 2015. However, he dealt with injury issues in 2020 and found himself released by the Texans. Teams will certainly take note of the five games he missed, as well as his dipping productivity. Still, his value as a third-down back shouldn’t be overlooked. At 27-years-old, he should be able to rebound.
2. Olivier Vernon
A Week 17 Achilles tendon rupture was just brutal for Vernon. The ninth-year veteran had just found his groove with the Browns, notching nine sacks in his final eight appearances of the 2020 season. Had he entered free agency healthy after that tear, he would have been in a great position. Unfortunately, the injury is a reality that will probably keep him off the field through the start of the coming season.
1. Allen Bailey
Bailey was a cap casualty in Atlanta this year after starting nine games over the last two seasons. The 32-year-old defensive lineman could give a team a valuable veteran body in the trenches for 2021. He was reasonably productive, though unspectacular, in that role for the Falcons.
