New York Yankees coach Phil Nevin has tested positive for COVID-19.

At the time of this writing, Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin has tested positive for COVID-19.

The team said in a statement that Nevin is fully vaccinated and under quarantine and protocols in Tampa, Florida, and he is going through contact tracing and additional testing. The Yankees are scheduled to play their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at 7 p.m. ET, and the game is expected to go on, as no players have been impacted. Bench coach Carlos Mendoza will replace Nevin to coach third base.

The news comes after the Yankees reached the 85 percent vaccination threshold a few weeks ago. The MLB had preciously incentivized teams to get vaccinated to reach “Tier 1,” which would relax COVID-19 restrictions for players, coaches, and all other staff. For example, “Tier 1” individuals would not have to wear masks in the dugout or bullpen and can be exempt from the league’s weekly testing.

New York is currently 18-16 with a 7-7 away record. Fingers crossed, the situation is not as severe as it seems and Nevin makes a full recovery.
