Chiefs trade for Mike Hughes, adding cornerback depth
The Kansas City Chiefs traded for Mike Hughes on Thursday afternoon, adding a veteran corner, and a former first-round pick, to their room.
Brett Veach loves former first-round talents. On Thursday, he nabbed another.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports the Minnesota Vikings sent cornerback Mike Hughes to the Kansas City Chiefs in a swap of late-round picks, which FanSided can confirm. Additionally, FanSided learned Kansas City sent over its 2022 sixth-round choice while Minnesota relinquishes its ’22 seventh-rounder.
Hughes, 24, has been underwhelming in his three seasons with the Vikings. A former Central Florida star, Hughes was selected 30th-overall in 2018 but has only notched 80 tackles and two interceptions in his career.
For Kansas City, it’s a minor gamble with upside. The Chiefs are in need of another cornerback after losing Bashaud Breeland to free agency and DeAndre Baker to a significant leg injury in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Chargers last season. Before adding Hughes, Kansas City’s corner situation was Charvarius Ward and L’Jarius Sneed on the boundary with Rashad Fenton inside. This trade doesn’t change the starting lineup, but adds behind it.
Since taking over as general manager in Kansas City, Veach has long track record of adding former first-round talents who didn’t pan out in their initial landing spot including offensive lineman Cam Erving, linebacker Darron Lee and Baker. The Chiefs also took on linebacker Reggie Ragland, a first-round talent who fell to the second round before the Buffalo Bills took him.
