One of the greatest first basemen of all-time, Albert Pujols gets a free agency re-do before he calls it quits for good.

Pujols struggled during his tenure with the Angels, failing to post a positive WAR season in the latter half of his lucrative deal. Los Angeles opted to cut bait, despite the impact Pujols had in the locker room and on perceived “little brother” Mike Trout.

Now that he has a chance to do it all over again, and perhaps head to a franchise that values him a little more, Pujols is opting to pick right. Per FanSided’s Robert Murray, he has 3-4 suitors already.

Is Albert Pujols worth a veteran minimum deal in free agency?

The Angels made it quite clear what most of baseball has thought for some time — Pujols is no longer an MLB-level starting player on a competitive team. Nonetheless, there are plenty of MLB teams in need of some pop, or potentially a midseason ticket draw.

The White Sox are already out of the running for Pujols, despite the presence of his former manager in ChiSox head man Tony La Russa. There’s no fit for Pujols even with the White Sox injury issues, which further speaks to how he’s valued around the league.

What about a return to St. Louis? The Cardinals wish Pujols the best, but it’s unlikely any team without the designated hitter at their disposal would give the 41-year-old regular playing time.

Pujols will go down as one of the best power-hitting first basemen of all-time, but the fact remains that his measurables and advanced stats have decreased across the board the last few seasons. He could be worth a flier in the right situation, and that’s what we’re watching play out on the open market right now.
