Xavier Martinez wants Chris Colbert who DMs him insults on the regular
Xavier Martinez is focused on opponent Juan Carlos Burgos, but he badly wants to fight Chris Colbert next. The two have an odd history.
Xavier Martinez and Chris Colbert are promising super featherweights, but they certainly don’t like each other. Martinez fights Juan Carlos Burgos on Saturday, May 15, but Colbert’s name keeps coming up.
FanSided first talked to Martinez before his bout with Claudio Marrero in October. Marrero tested Martinez’s chin and knocked him down twice. Martinez withstood adversity and outpointed Marrero to earn a unanimous decision victory.
Looking back at that fight, Martinez feels like he got lackadaisical but was never hurt.
“I mean, for me, I was I think I was winning the fight, the first part pretty easily,” Martinez told FanSided. “I think what made it tough for me is I got too comfortable, and I got caught. I caught falling asleep. You know, I fell asleep for a quick second. He took advantage of it.”
Martinez added, “It was a buzz in the moment. You’ve seen the fight. He hit me with a temple shot. When I went down a second time, I was aware of what was going on. But I think just a combination of him coming towards me and then me moving back and not fully having my legs there caused me to go down again.”
Martinez showed resiliency against Marrero, and he has another tough foe in Burgos. Burgos has never been stopped in 40 professional fights. Burgos’ chin gives Martinez an added desire to score the knockout, but he won’t actively look for it.
Xavier Martinez fights Juan Carlos Burgos next, but Chris Colbert keeps messaging him on Instagram, according to Martinez
“I mean, it does,” said Martinez of his desire to score the KO. “One thing I think I’ve learned early with Ray Woods, he’s always told me don’t ever look for the knockout.”
While Martinez is thinking of Burgos, Colbert lingers in the back of his mind. Martinez named Colbert as a desirable opponent to FanSided in October.
“Chris Colbert. That’s the one fight that has to be made, you know, either now or later down the line,” said Martinez at the time. “I think that’ll be a great, fun fight for the both of us.”
Martinez and Colbert had words last year on social media. FanSided briefly talked to Colbert about Martinez in December before his contest with Jaime Arboleda. Colbert dismissed Martinez as irrelevant but with more harsh wording. He fights Yuriorkis Gamboa on July 3.
Apparently, Colbert keeps a running dialogue with Martinez on Instagram.
“And He keeps messaging me in my DMs just talking,” said Martinez.
Martinez continued, “He just he says like, ‘You ready for me to beat yo a**,’ or he calls me a pu***. And it’s like, man, are we gonna fight or talk? Which one do you want to do? I’m not really into all the back and forth on social media stuff, so I’m just like we either sign a contract and we see what happens then, or there’s just say no point talking.”
The war of words between the two continues, but they each have matchups to win for the possibility of a showdown. Martinez is up first on Showtime against Burgos.
