Brandon Turnage provides a huge boost to the Georgia football team’s defensive backfield.

Former Alabama football player Brandon Turnage has transferred and will join the Georgia football program after two seasons in Tuscaloosa with the Crimson Tide.

Turnage comes to Athens this summer, hoping to fill some major voids felt in the Georgia defensive backfield. The Dawgs lost a ton of talent in the secondary to the 2021 NFL Draft. Turnage initially committed to Alabama in 2019 but maintained a strong relationship with former Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke, who is now in his second season as Georgia’s offensive line coach.

Here is how Turnage could factor into Georgia’s depth chart ahead of the 2021 college season.

Georgia football: Former Alabama football player Brandon Turnage transfers

The Oxford, Mississippi native was a former four-star recruit out of high school. The Athletic’s Seth Emerson provided a sneak peek at what Turnage could mean to the Georgia program, both in the short-term and in the long run. At a minimum, Turnage provides depth at a major position group of need at Georgia. He can play cornerback, safety or the safety/linebacker hybrid known as the STAR.

Turnage is the second major Power 5 transfer Georgia has added to the defensive backfield. Tykee Smith followed his former defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae over from West Virginia earlier this offseason. After spring practice, safety Lewis Cine is the only Georgia player of note with ample playing experience in the Dawgs’ defensive backfield at this time. Turnage should have a rotational role.

By adding Turnage in the transfer portal, the Georgia secondary got better by way of depth.
