Super featherweights Xavier Martinez and Juan Carlos Burgos put on a show for the fans at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA.

Super featherweight boxers Xavier Martinez and Juan Carlos Burgos opened up the action on May 15 on the undercard of the Luis Nery vs. Brandon Figueroa championship main event. Martinez and Burgos gave the bouts that followed a lot to live up to after engaging in an all-out war.

Martinez (17-0, 11 KOs) held the edge on paper since he is the younger, undefeated fighter at just 23 years of age, but Burgos brought experience and a granite chin to the table with 21 years as a professional boxer.

In all that time, no one has ever knocked out Burgos, including Mikey Garcia, Devin Haney, and Hector Tanajara. Martinez tried to become the first to stop Burgos but had to settle for a unanimous decision in an absolute slugfest.

The actions started in round 1 and continued through the final bell in round 10. There was no feel-out round and very few tie-ups.  Martinez and Burgos fought inside a phone booth and traded punches for 30 minutes of fighting.

Martinez’s left hook to the head was his best punch, but he had to fight off the ropes often. Burgos put in a lot of work to Martinez’s body, but Martinez teed off on Burgos’s head.

They let their hands go non-stop for the final minute in round 10. Both men wanted the win, but the judges returned three scores of 99-91 for Xavier Martinez, giving him the unanimous decision.

Claudio Marrero tested Martinez in his last bout in October. He had to get off the floor twice to battle back to win that fight by decision. Burgos gave Martinez a test, but Martinez’s defense was more sound, and he didn’t have any of the scares of the Marrero fight.

Martinez remains undefeated and hopes to fight rival Chris Colbert soon.
