Brandon Figueroa drops and stops Luis Nery in round 7 (Video)
Brandon Figueroa added to his belt collection in a big way by knocking out Luis Nery to take Nery’s WBC super bantamweight title.
Brandon Figueroa scored the biggest victory of his six-year professional boxing career by becoming the first person to defeat Luis Nery in knockout fashion on Saturday, May 15.
Figueroa (22-0-1, 16 KOs) came into his contest with Nery possessing the WBA “regular” title but now has the WBC belt as well after stopping Nery with a left hook to the body that forced Nery to the canvas for the 10 count.
Nery (31-1, 24 KOs) started the fight well at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. He was active and effectively targeted Figueroa’s body. Figueroa also let his hands go, but Nery was landing the more meaningful punches.
The tide started to change little by little. Nery stopped engaging Figueroa around round 4. He tried to move around the ring, but Figueroa was all over him. Figueroa forced Nery to fight his fight.

By round 6, Figueroa started to land more and more to Nery’s head. Nery fought back but missed many of his punches.
In round 7, Figueroa continued to come on strong, and Nery looked tired. Figueroa unleashed a hook to Nery’s body that had a slightly delayed effect but forced him down. Nery couldn’t get up in time and was counted out by the referee.
The ending was ironic considering the amount of attention Nery paid to the body. Figueroa’s conditioning made the difference. He delivered a higher punch output and had more energy than Nery.
Figueroa is poised to fight WBO champion Stephen Fulton in the fall for a major unification bout. Fulton won his title in January by beating Angelo Leo by unanimous decision.
Figueroa vs. Fulton is a dynamic matchup that pairs two fighters that let their hands go at an emphatic rate. The winner will control half of the division. Murodjon Akhmadaliev holds the other two major division titles.
