Jon Lester received a proper ovation from Cubs fans in his return to Wrigley Field.

Jon Lester signed a massive six-year deal with the Chicago Cubs before the 2015 season, and the rest is history. He was a key piece on the 2016 championship team and will go down in Cubs lore as a legend.

That’s why is must be weird for Cubs fans to see him in another uniform. However, Lester returned to Wrigley Field on Monday as a member of the Washington Nationals and got an ovation like he would have if he had been wearing a Cubs jersey.

Fans in Chicago remember the contributions of Jon Lester

Things were starting to change for the franchise when Lester arrived. Chicago made it all the way to the NLCS in 2015 after a 97-win regular season. The dominance only continued in 2016 with 103 wins and the NL Central crown.

2016 is the season fans will never forget, but Lester was an All-Star once again in 2018 before his play started to decline in 2019 and 2020. He still helped the club accomplish the ultimate goal, and for that, he left on good terms.

The southpaw signed a one-year deal with the Nationals this past offseason and has made three starts so far in 2021. He of course wants to beat his old team Monday night, but it has to be nice just to be back on the mound at Wrigley after 2020 seemed like a final farewell.

Cubs fans are loyal, and Lester will always hold a special place in their hearts. Just expect the cheering to stop if he is doing too well against his former team.
