Former Duke basketball guard Jordan Goldwire made the case for a Blue Devils assistant to succeed Coach K once he decides to retire.

Duke basketball fans don’t want to have the question answered too soon, but eventually, the Blue Devils will have to find someone to replace legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Former guard Jordan Goldwire, who is transferring to Oklahoma for his final season of eligibility, has a suggestion.

Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils associate head coach, would be his pick.

“You know, the Duke tree is so big and there are so many good coaches in college basketball and the NBA, but coach Jon Scheyer was at Duke the entire time I was there, and he does a great job with skill work and he’s a really smart guy,” Goldwire told USA Today. “I think he would be the one who deserves that job. I don’t make the decisions, but that would be my choice.”

Jordan Goldwire would hire Jon Scheyer as the next Duke head coach

Scheyer played four years at Duke under Krzyzewski from 2006-10. A consensus All-American and team captain, he helped lead the team to a national title during his senior season.

After going unselected in the NBA Draft, Scheyer ended up playing in the D-League before landing in the Israeli league. He also played briefly in Spain.

It says something about the respect Coach K had for him as a player that he welcomed him immediately onto the Duke staff when his playing career was over.

In 2014, Scheyer got a full-time job as an assistant coach and he’s stayed there since.

Krzyzewski turned 74 in February, so talk of retirement definitely looms. The Blue Devils could do worse than Scheyer, but the job will be one of the most coveted in college basketball, so who knows who might emerge as a candidate?
