Trent Richardson will play football this season for the Caudillos de Chihuahua, a Mexican football league.

Former Alabama football star running back Trent Richardson has signed to play in a Mexican football league this year, according to the Tuscaloosa News.

Richardson was a unanimous All-American and Doak Walker winner in 2011 for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He won a pair of national titles playing for Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa. However, he will go down as one of the biggest draft busts. He went No. 3 overall to the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 NFL Draft, but washed out of the league after the 2016 campaign.

Richardson last played for the Birmingham Iron in the now-defunct AAF in 2019, but he is very excited about his opportunity to suit up for the Caudillos de Chihuahua in the Liga de Fútbol Americano de Mexico.

“A lot of people don’t get this opportunity,” said Richardson, via the Tuscaloosa News. “It’s huge, and I know they think I’m doing them a favor but they’re definitely doing me a favor … I’m going to do everything I can to make this league better, to bring awareness to Mexico. I’m here to help out coach and also learn from coach.”

Richardson turns 31-years-old this summer when most running backs are hanging up the spikes. But Richardson is hoping to spread awareness of the new league he plays in, as well as getting one last (long) shot in the NFL. Prior to the AAF being shut down in 2019, Richardson had his moments playing for Birmingham. However, he did not play football last year.

Ultimately, Richardson clearly has a place in a growing international football league. While football has been mostly a domestic product, it does have a market in countries such as Mexico and across Europe.
