Jose Abreu’s violent collision does have some injury repercussions
By John Buhler
Jose Abreu will miss the Chicago White Sox’s upcoming road series vs. the Minnesota Twins.
Let’s just say Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu had himself a weekend against the Kansas City Royals on the South Side.
After splitting the four-game homestand with their AL Central rivals, Abreu will not play in the South Siders’ next series against the Minnesota Twins due to ankle inflammation. He first hurt the ankle in a violent collision with Royals infielder Hunter Dozier on Friday. While Abreu came back and played in the final two games of the series, he hurt it again sliding into home during the finale.
White Sox skipper Tony La Russa expects him to return this weekend vs. the New York Yankees.
Chicago White Sox: Jose Abreu to miss Minnesota Twins series with ankle injury
At 24-15, the White Sox not only have the best record in the AL Central, but they have the best win percentage in all of baseball. Chicago is winning 61.5 percent of its games, and has a 2.5-game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the divisional race. Their only two losses in the their last 10 games came to the Royals during this past weekend’s series. Can they keep it up against Minnesota?
While Abreu being unavailable is not ideal, the Twins have the worst record in the American League at 13-25. Even the pitiful Detroit Tigers are percentage points better than them in the middle of May. A few days off will do Abreu a world of good, but if his ankle injury has lingering effects beyond this Twins series, that could be problematic for Chicago. They will need him back.
The last thing the White Sox would want is for Abreu to hurt himself on the base path yet again.
