3 realistic goals for New York Knicks in 2021 NBA Playoffs
2. Get the young core some much-needed playoff experience
Getting to the postseason proved this young Knicks core was capable of taking that next step. Now comes the tough part of actually performing at the game’s highest stage.
Mitchell Robinson remains out with a broken foot, and guys like Frank Ntilikina and Kevin Knox have struggled to get minutes, but Randle, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin are among those young Knicks already proving they are here to stay. That means the coaching staff will eventually need to rely on their young stars to carry the load in the future. The only way they will learn how to do so is with experience.
Thibodeau seems like a coach who truly believes his team can win the title this year. That is partially why the Knicks are playing so tough. But he also knows this team can be a long-term contender with proper experience in the postseason.
That is why he is going to push his team in the first round like it’s a Finals contender. Getting beyond the Hawks would teach this young core how to win in the summer. Some help from key veterans like Derrick Rose, Taj Gibson, Reggie Bullock, Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel would be nice as well.
Even Rose is someone who could benefit from a good opening round. He has the experience but could use a boost in confidence. Playing well on a national stage would also earn him a nice payday.
