Mets address limited outfield depth in trade with Cubs
With the New York Mets needing some outfield depth, they’ve gone out and traded with the Cubs for veteran Cameron Maybin.
With the New York Mets hanging on to first place in the NL East standings, the front office is ready to try and help the lineup out for the long haul. It’s no secret the team is in need of some depth for the outfield, which is why Tuesday’s news is sure to excite fans in Queens.
That’s because according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the team has gone out and traded for veteran Cameron Maybin. A Mets and Cubs trade in late mid-May? You better believe it.
Cameron Maybin has been traded by the Chicago Cubs to the New York Mets
Maybin is in his 14th season and he’s of course no stranger to packing his bags and heading to a new city. He’s quite the journeyman, as he’s suited up for the Padres, Marlins, Tigers, Braves, Dodgers, Mariners, Angels, Yankees, Astros and Cubs throughout his career. Seriously, this guy’s mileage program has got to be on fire.
While Maybin, who signed a minors deal in late March with the Cubs, is yet to appear in a game for Chicago this season, he’s great defensively and has proven multiple times in his career he can provide a club with a clutch hit in a big situation. For his career, Maybin is a .256 hitter, with 72 homers and 354 RBI.
He won’t arrive to Flushing and put up phenomenal numbers, but manager Luis Rojas will surely expect him to deliver when his number is called. Who knows, maybe Maybin can provide memorable moments in the postseason should New York go on to play some ball in the playoffs.
