Braves get exciting update on recent signing Shane Greene

The Braves could get some bullpen help sooner rather than later thanks to Shane Greene.

Atlanta finally signed Greene — his former and now current home — after a prolonged free agency which saw his financial standards decrease once the season began. The Braves needed some bullpen help, filling a Greene-sized void on the back end in front of current closer Will Smith.

So, when will Greene be available to join the current version of Atlanta’s ‘pen?

Per manager Brian Snitker, Greene will make about 5-6 starts in the minors to get his arm right before heading to the major leagues.

Greene will head to Triple-A Gwinnett for some tune-ups before he makes his way to the bigs once again, hopefully for the long haul.

Atlanta Braves need all the help they can get

The NL East no longer runs through Atlanta, with significant competition arising in the form of the New York Mets, and even Philadelphia Phillies.

The Braves, losers of three games in a row, sit four games under .500 and just as many contests behind the New York Mets for first place in the division. The Phillies are in their way as well, at just one game behind New York for the division lead.

Greene’s asking price was high heading into the offseason, but his consistent velocity decrease isn’t the stuff of an elite back-end bullpen force. Yet, his numbers from last season — a 2.60 ERA and 1.12 WHIP — suggest otherwise.

So, Alex Anthopoulos signed Greene to a short-term prove it deal, inking the 32-year-old to a $1.5 million contract.

Should he perform admirably, Greene will have a chance to cash in this coming Winter.
