The New York Mets will be without first baseman Pete Alonso at least for a little while.

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has been placed on the injured list with a sprained right wrist.

Alonso had played in the Mets’ first 36 games of the season. However, he did not play in New York’s series finale at the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night. The Mets currently have the best record in the NL East at 20-17, but only 4.5 games separate the entire division top to bottom. New York has had trouble scoring runs this season, and will now be down their star at first base.

Will the Mets be able to stay atop the tight NL East while Alonso works his way back from this?

New York now has 16 player combined on the injured list, including 7 of 9 that were in the Opening Day lineup. Yikes.

The good news for the Mets is they have a fairly navigable schedule over the next week and change while Alonso recovers from his injury. They will finish up their road trip with a weekend series at the Miami Marlins before playing four games at home vs. the struggling Colorado Rockies. After that, they host the Braves for three games before entering the final day of May.

Even though the Mets do not have their next off-day until June 7, they should be thanking their lucky stars to not have games against the cream of the crop of the NL West or vs. high-quality teams like the rival Philadelphia Phillies or the St. Louis Cardinals of the NL Central. The Mets could still be in first place by the time Alonso is healthy enough to return to the New York starting lineup.

Don’t expect the Mets to nosedive in the standings during Alonso’s time on the IL with his wrist.
