This could be the best college season the Oklahoma football team has had in over a generation.

While winning a single College Football Playoff remains a real issue, the Oklahoma football team is one of a handful of teams that could go undefeated this season.

Though the robin-round nature of the Big 12 regular season is often unforgiving, Oklahoma is the best team in its Power 5 conference. The Sooners have won the Big 12 each of the last six seasons. While they have made the playoff four of those times, they have yet to win a national semifinal game. However, Lincoln Riley might have his best team to date in Norman this year.

Oklahoma football: Will Spencer Rattler and the Sooners go undefeated?

When looking at the Oklahoma football schedule, you would be hard-pressed to find a game on the slate and definitively say the Sooners are dropping that one. They should enter Big 12 play at 3-0, no matter how much former rival Nebraska wants to beat them. While West Virginia, Kansas State and Texas could all potentially upset the Sooners, they may not lose until late November.

Yes, the game that looks to be the most uninviting is the home date when Matt Campbell’s Iowa State Cyclones come to town. Iowa State won the regular-season meeting in Ames a year ago but narrowly fell to the Sooners in the Big 12 Championship game in the rematch in Arlington. Iowa State then went on to take care of business over the Oregon Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl in January.

Overall, we are looking at an Oklahoma team that could be 10-0 before hosting Iowa State. If the Sooners stay perfect, they will probably beat Oklahoma State in Bedlam. After that, maybe a 12-0 falls to Iowa State, Texas or some other team in a Big 12 title bout rematch?

From there, a 13-0 Oklahoma could potentially fall in the national semifinals of the College Football Playoff or beyond.

If the Sooners navigate Big 12 play to perfection, they may have what it takes to win it all.
