Milwaukee Brewers call up infielder Keston Hiura, but not to replace Kolten Wong

The Milwaukee Brewers are bringing infielder Keston Hiura back up to the big leagues.

On Monday morning, the Milwaukee Brewers recalled infielder Keston Hiura.

According to FanSided‘s Robert Murray, the corresponding move is not to send second baseman Kolten Wong on the injured list after he was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s series finale vs. the Cincinnati Reds.

Hiura is hitting .152 on the year with the Brewers in 89 plate appearances over 26 games. He last played for the Brewers on May 2 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers having most recently played for the club’s AAA affiliate Nashville Sounds.

The Brewers need to do something to keep pace in a tight NL Central race with their rival teams.

Will Keston Hiura be able to provide a spark the Brewers have been missing?

Milwaukee got back to .500 with its 9-4 victory over the division rival Reds on Sunday. Though they took two of three from Cincinnati, the Brewers have gone 4-6 in their last 10 games. They are currently three games back of the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals, despite being 10-12 at home this season. Unfortunately, the NL West juggernaut San Diego Padres are coming to town.

This will be the Padres’ lone trip to Milwaukee this year and the Brewers will have to be ready for Fernando Tatis Jr. and the rest of the Friars’ vaunted offensive attack. Perhaps a stint down in AAA will do Hiura some good, or at least that is what the Brewers organization is hoping for? Either way, the Brewers cannot afford to lose ground to the Cardinals or the Chicago Cubs in the Central.

Hiura’s Milwaukee return may serve as the spark the Brewers need to make up some ground here.
