Kevin Durant and the Nets may have had a slow start in Game 1, but they showed resilience to weather the storm thanks to their star forward’s 32 points and 12 rebounds.
Kyrie Irving came to play with 29 points and 6 rebounds. Meanwhile, James Harden probably has more to give than his 21 points, but his 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals offered plenty.
More of that and Brooklyn can feel confident in their position as nine-point favorites. If those three are at their best, the Nets will have the clear edge.
The Celtics got 22 points from Jayson Tatum in Game 1. His average on the season was 26.4 points per game, so he’ll be looking to respond with more output. Boston has no hope of pulling off an upset if he’s not putting in big performances.
Without Jaylen Brown, Tatum will also need Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart and Evan Fournier to offer a lot more than their 15, 17 and 10 points, respectively, to keep up with Durant and company.
For Boston, the whole has to be greater than the sum of the parts.
