Alex Smith says Chiefs taking Patrick Mahomes was no surprise
Alex Smith made it more than clear the Kansas City Chiefs informed him that they’d be using their first-round pick on Patrick Mahomes back in 2017.
With all of the drama that’s been going on between the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers, did the same happen with the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2017 with Patrick Mahomes and Alex Smith? Absolutely not.
In an appearance on ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd,’ Smith went on to call out the Packers for how they’ve treated Rodgers, but at the same time he had nothing but great things to say about the Kansas City superstar.
Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith remains a big fan of Patrick Mahomes
“Yes, without a doubt, 100 percent,” Smith said with passion when asked if the Chiefs told him about Mahomes. “That’s something that was talked about throughout the draft process not just by coach (Andy) Reid, but everyone involved in the personnel department. I’m talking multiple times. ‘Hey this is something we might be doing, are you okay with it? This is going to to be the situation.’ There we no surprises. It was absolutely laid out for me.”
As you can see from Smith’s quote above, he had no issues with the Chiefs using the No. 10 overall pick on Mahomes. If anything, he truly appreciated just how open and honest the front office was with him about their long-term plans. That surely hasn’t been the case between Rodgers and the Packers. If anything, the opposite has been the case.
While Smith ended up starting the 2017 campaign, it was no secret that his time running the offense was on borrowed time. Mahomes has since won the job and powered the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning it all in Feb. 2020. Smith suffered his gruesome leg injury, but was able to work his way back in incredible fashion for the Washington Football Team.
Smith officially announced his retirement from the NFL this offseason. He’s been showered with love and praise from countless folks, including Mahomes. Now we must wait to see if Rodgers decides to follow suit.
