Fan dumps popcorn on Russell Westbrook as he exits game with injury (Video)
A fan dumped popcorn on Russell Westbrook as he was exiting Game 2 of the Washington Wizards’ first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers.
We realize asking Philadelphia sports fans to keep it classy is like wishing the sun would cool down, or asking Kanye West to calm down, but this kind of behavior is just unacceptable.
Late in Game 2 of the Washington Wizards‘ first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers, Russell Westbrook was exiting the game with an ankle injury. As he was heading into the tunnel with the Wizards medical staff, one fan thought it’d be funny to dump popcorn all over the 32-year-old guard.
Westbrook was clearly incensed by this blatant display of disrespect and had to be restrained by team personnel as he looked up for the fan and pointed in his/her direction.
Russell Westbrook was justifiably upset about being showered with popcorn
There’s no place in the sport of basketball — or any sport, for that matter — for this kind of sendoff for a player leaving a game with an injury. Not only were the Sixers comfortably ahead, making this behavior even more uncalled for, but Westbrook wasn’t even playing at the time. And no matter who’s in or out of the game, NBA players should be respected for the all-world competitors that they are, not treated like circus performers that are simply here for our amusement.
The NBA would be nothing without its fans, but these fans would also have nothing without some of these unbelievable athletes dedicating themselves to playing and excelling in this beautiful sport. There’s something sickening about a fan feeling entitled enough to dump popcorn on any basketball player, let alone a world-class professional who’s entertained the league for more than a decade now.
Be better, Sixers fans.
