New York Knicks fans rocked The Garden on Sunday night, but the team’s first playoff game in almost a decade ended the same way the last one did — in defeat.

Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks silenced MSG with a last-second dagger that sets the stage for what could be the most exciting existential and nihilistic series of the playoffs. Knicks-Hawks is the definition of a tear in the rain, as neither team will play in the NBA Finals and this series will ultimately contribute nothing more to the playoffs than a victim for a contender.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun as hell.

That’s about as throwback as it gets. Nothing screams Knicks Playoffs like an opponent silencing The Garden while taunting Spike Lee.

New York can, and probably will, strike back in Game 2. The Knicks first playoff game since 2013 was always going to be more about the atmosphere and experience than an actual result. For the Knicks, the series starts now and it’s time to see what Tom Thibodeau’s crew has up its sleeve.

Will they win the Finals? Probably not. Will Thibs ride his guys into the ground and not stop until they hit the core of the planet? Almost certainly. But  New York has a talented team behind Julius Randle and Derrick Rose, and they have a chance to prove their worth and exact revenge in Game 2.
