The Green Bay Packers announced they’ve signed wide receiver DeAndre Thompkins, but this isn’t nearly enough to make Aaron Rodgers happy.

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers announced they’ve reached a new deal with wide receiver DeAndre Thompkins. Big news, right? Not so much. While Thompkins was a standout at Penn State, he hasn’t quite made things work in the NFL and most recently played in the XFL.

As an undrafted free agent in 2019, he ended up signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Then, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, but never appeared in a regular season game for either squad. So, does Brian Gutekunst think this will please Aaron Rodgers?

The Packers signing receiver DeAndre Thompkins is nothing to phone home about

While Thompkins indeed was a stud at Penn State both offensively and on special teams, this isn’t the kind of signing that will have Rodgers jumping for joy. Someone like Will Fuller or TY Hilton would have sufficed, but Gutekunst swung and missed on both of them this offseason.

Rodgers remains in the middle of his offseason drama with Green Bay, with fans not having any idea as to whether or not the future Hall-of-Famer will be leading the offense out onto the field come Week 1.

It really feels like there’s a chance Rodgers will either retire or sit out the 2021 campaign. Rodgers has made it perfectly clear that he has no issues with Jordan Love, Green Bay’s 2020 first-round pick, or any of his teammates.

Instead, it is the front office’s lack of a philosophy that has him upset. Signing a former XFL wideout who has never appeared in a regular season game sure isn’t going to inspire Rodgers to rejoin the Packers in a hurried fashion.
