Obi Toppin‘s mom got emotional after hearing New York Knicks fans chant her son’s name.
New York Knicks rookie Obi Toppin played big minutes down the stretch to help the home crowd win Game 2 over the Atlanta Hawks.
Toppin had eight points and three rebounds in 12 minutes of action, as the Knicks defeated Atlanta 101-92 on Wednesday night. His thunderous jam led to the Madison Square Garden crowd to chant his name. Toppin’s mom, who was wearing his iconic Dayton Flyers jersey in attendance, was moved to tears by the magical moment. Atlanta passed on Toppin in the draft.
This moment had to have made up for Toppin and the Flyers not getting their NCAA Tournament.

Toppin went No. 8 overall to the Knicks in the 2020 NBA Draft. While he was not coming off the board in the top three, the former Flyers star could have gone to the Hawks picking at No. 6. Instead, they took center Onyeka Okongwu out of USC with that selection. This was a big opportunity for Toppin to stick it to a team that did not think he could help them win games.
What makes this moment so special is Toppin’s 2019-20 Flyers were having their best season in school history. This was a team that would have gotten a No. 1 seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament. Had it not been canceled due to COVID-19, Toppin could have led Dayton to an NCAA Championship out of the A-10. To have all of MSG erupt for him, now that has to feel very special.
The Knicks will take on the Hawks in Game 3 on Friday night live from Atlanta, Georgia.
