1. Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Semifinals back in 2020. Many analysts thought they were going to be a Stanley Cup contender in 2021. Instead, the Flyers stayed true to their history by surprising everybody – and not in a good way.

They ended the 2020-21 season as one of the worst teams in the NHL. Their month of March was simply brutal, as they went 6-10-1, giving them the third-worst record in the league during March. Not only that, the Flyers also gave up the most goals per game, as teams scored well over four goals per game against them.

According to The Fourth Period, the Flyers tried very hard to bolster their defense this season after Matt Niskanen unexpectedly retired.

General Manager Chuck Fletcher has been with the Flyers since December of 2018. Aside from trading for Niskanen and overpaying Kevin Hayes in free agency, he hasn’t made any huge moves to upgrade the roster. It’s not entirely his fault because he has yet to experience a full 82 game season with the Flyers, but at the same time, he’s got to do something.

Seth Jones would replace Niskanen as Ivan Provorov’s right-hand man on the top pairing. Provorov dearly missed Niskanen’s calm, safe, and stabilizing presence this season, as he had one of the worst years of his NHL career.
