1. BYU Cougars
Ty Detmer might be the poster child for having a great college career that far overshadowed his pro career. Detmer threw for over 15,000 yards at BYU with 121 touchdowns. He led the WAC three times in passing yards, touchdowns, efficiency and completion percentage. He led the conference twice in completions. Detmer led the NCAA twice in passing yards and efficiency. He was an All-American in both 1990 and 1991 while winning the 1990 Heisman, Davey O’Brien and Maxwell Awards. Detmer also won the 1991 O’Brien Award. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Jim McMahon’s antics sometimes made us forget his amazing abilities. No one in Provo will forget. McMahon threw for over 9,500 yards with 84 touchdowns. He led the WAC twice in completions, passing yards, touchdowns, efficiency and completion percentage. He led the NCAA twice in completions and efficiency while leading it once in passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage. McMahon was an All-American in both 1980 and 1981 and won the 1981 Davey O’Brien Award. He was fifth in the 1980 Heisman voting and third in 1981. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
If it seems ridiculous to put Steve Young third on this list, keep in mind that College Football Hall of Famer Marc Wilson is left off said list. Young threw for over 7,700 yards with 56 passing and 18 rushing touchdowns. He led the WAC twice in completions, passing yards, touchdowns, efficiency and completion percentage. He led the NCAA once in each of those categories. Young was a 1983 All-American, the same year he won the Davey O’Brien Award. Like Detmer and McMahon, he is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
The Cougar trio threw for over 32,000 yards with 261 passing and 42 rushing touchdowns, one Heisman and all three inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
