Bills and 3 playoff contenders that should trade for Zach Ertz
1. Buffalo Bills
In an interesting bit of timing, according to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Bills restructured wide receiver Stefon Diggs’ contract on Tuesday morning by converting a chunk of base salary into a signing bonus. That will create an extra $7.8 million in cap space, pushing their total space to $11-$12 million, depending on the source. That’s plenty enough to take on Ertz’s $8.25 million.
The Bills have one of the top offenses in the league, with a deep group of wide receivers (Diggs, Cole Beasley, Emmanuel Sanders, Gabriel Davis) around quarterback Josh Allen. No. 1 tight end Dawson Knox has potential, but he’s not anywhere close to the top tier at the position. The ship has not necessarily sailed on adding someone else to the mix at tight end, especially as Ertz has lingered available.
Buffalo was one of the teams with reported interest in Ertz near the outset of the offseason, but it appears the Eagles’ asking price was too rich for them–and anyone else. Circling back now feels obvious, as the Eagles should be motivated to make a deal, and the Bills are an ideal spot for Ertz to have a rebound season in 2021.
