The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox face off for the first time this season over the weekend in the latest rendition of the best rivalry in baseball.

Sure, for those outside the Northeast it might be a bit overplayed, but the Yankees and Red Sox possess two of the best brand names in all of professional sports, and are routinely playing one another for AL East supremacy. This weekend is no different, though the Tampa Bay Rays currently hold the division lead.

The Red Sox got off to a fast start this season, holding the division lead for much of the first two months of the campaign, at least until a recent Rays winning streak. The Yankees, meanwhile, have faced more of an uphill battle after a dreadful start to their year.

The Red Sox sit 2.5 games out of first place, while the Yankees are 4.5 games behind the Rays. A recent slide by the Yankees has opened up some breathing room between New York, Boston and Tampa. The Bronx Bombers are 3-7 in their last ten games, including losing a series to the Rays at home just prior to the Red Sox visit.
