The CONCACAF Nationās League Final between the USA and Mexico was marred by the reprehensible actions of a fan who threw a full can at Gio Reynaās head.
The NBA playoffs have been filled with instances of terrible fan behavior, prompting players to speak out about the abuse they face.
The experience of USA soccer players during the CONCACAF Nationās League Final makes the popcorn dumps and soda throws pale in comparison.
After Christian Pulisic gave the US a lead in extra time, the mass of American players celebrating near the corner flag were pelted by trash. Then, someone threw a full can of soda or beer and hit Gio Reyna in the head.
Reyna fell to the floor and had to be treated by trainers. He was eventually helped off the pitch.
Fan behavior during the USA vs. Mexico match was despicable
It was a disgusting moment in a game that already featured questionable behavior. The match actually had to be paused partway through because Mexico fans used a homophobic chant.
Even after the terrifying incident with Reyna, objects continued to be thrown at players any time they came close to the stands.
That kind of behavior is unacceptable and should be addressed by CONCACAF. The literal safety of players is at stake.
The USA ultimately won the game despite some late drama and some serious setbacks.
Mexico struck first with a goal in the second minute. Reyna tied it up in the 27th minute. In the second half, goalkeeper Zack Steffen had to come out because of an injury. He was replaced by Ethan Horvath, who gave up a goal to Diego Lainez not long after.
Fortunately for the keeper, Weston McKennie responded just three minutes later. From then on, Horvath was immense. The US took the lead thanks to Pulisic in the 114th minute, but it looked like Mexico would tie it back up when they were awarded a penalty on a handball. Horvath became the hero when he saved it and ensured the victory.
