Tom Brady rookie card sells for record sum at auction

As Tom Brady keeps setting new standards on the field, another of his rookie cards has set a record sale price.

Tom Brady has defied age on the field, as it seems like he could play until he’s 50. But the records he’s setting aren’t limited to the field. On Friday night, a Brady rookie card sold for $3.107 million at the Lelands Mid-Spring Classic Auction. That is the most ever paid for a football card at a public auction.

The card, a 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket Autograph, is one of seven of its kind graded Mint 9 and none are graded higher. Another copy of the card, graded NM-MT 8.5, was sold for $2.25 million by Lelands back in April. In March, yet another of the card, graded at an 8, sold for $1.32 million on the PWCC Marketplace.

“Tom Brady is the GOAT and continues to break records both on and off the playing field. It’s only fitting that Brady has set another record for the most expensive football card ever sold in public auction,” said Jordan Gilroy, director of acquisitions at Lelands.

Tom Brady cards and collectibles are front and center of industry boom

Before the auction price stretched to over $3 million, Lelands acknowledged the new record sale for a football card. From that point, bidding went up roughly another $600,000 over six hours.

At the same auction, the football from Brady’s first career touchdown pass sold for $428,842. The consignor of the ball was the fan who caught it on Oct. 14, 2001 when Terry Glenn threw it into the stands following his celebration.

The way its been going, with a pandemic-fueled a boom of interest in sports cards, that $3.1 million record sale for a football card won’t last long. Another of these same Brady rookie cards will surely surface in another public auction, and set a new record that will be topped quickly.
