Gerrit Cole was put on the spot when it came to using substances while pitching and his answer has caused quite the stir among MLB fans.

Here we are in June and there’s some controversial storylines making up countless headlines in MLB. The latest? Sticky substances used by pitchers when they’re hurling the ball trying to sit down batters. It’s being discussed more and more.

On Tuesday, New York Yankees hurler Gerrit Cole was put on the spot and asked if he’s ever used Spider Tack while on the bump. Rather than straight-up deny things, Cole made it seem like he’s no stranger to this. Take a look for yourself.

New York Yankees hurler Gerrit Cole didn’t deny using substances when asked

What in the world was Cole thinking here? He would have been way better off just saying “pass” or “no comment” when asked about this. Instead, he indeed made it seem like he’s been guilty of something like this in the past.

“I don’t quite know how to answer that, to be honest,” Cole said. “If MLB wants to legislate some more stuff, that’s a conversation that we can have.”

Woof. All over social media, folks are ripping Cole for this, and rightfully so. A lot of people are even taking aim at him for previously pitching for the Houston Astros. We all know about the huge amount of controversy surrounding that organization.

On the year, Cole has once again been sensational, as he’s 6-3 with a 2.26 ERA and 106 strikeouts for New York. There’s no denying he’s one of the best pitchers in the bigs. He’s got downright nasty stuff. With that said, he needs to be a bit smarter here when talking the press. This is a bad look all around for the veteran righty.
