3 San Antonio Spurs players who won’t be back next season
By Scott Rogust
Rudy Gay, once a longtime member of the Memphis Grizzlies, just concluded his fourth season with the Spurs. He is now set to become a free agent, who fills the role of a veteran option off the bench. It is not a matter of if the Spurs can retain him, but if another team gives him an offer he can not refuse, whether that is for more money or the chance to play for a championship contender.
Gay’s stint in San Antonio mostly saw him come off the bench, with the lone exception being in the 2018-19 season, where he started in 51-of-69 games. If there was one thing that the veteran swingman was good at, it was converting on his shot attempts. That was evident this past season.
Through 63 games (one start), Gay averaged 11.4 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 42.0-percent from the field on 10.0 shot attempts per game.
It is not a matter of the Spurs not wanting to re-sign Gay. It is more of whether the veteran wants to join a team with increased odds of contending for the Larry O’Brien trophy.
