Wrigley Field’s ‘Opening Day’ with a full crowd went swimmingly, with a seventh-inning stretch from Bill Murray and a Cubs win over the rival St. Louis Cardinals.
It doesn’t get much better than that for a day game on the North side of Chicago, does it?
The Cubs and Cardinals and battling it out in the NL Central, with the Milwaukee Brewers joining them in the top-3. For Chicago, Friday marked the first time all season the Cubs were allowed to sell tickets at full capacity, and the sounds of the ballpark were as great as we remembered them.
That home run — from the face of this current Cubs crop, Anthony Rizzo — tied the game after a 14-pitch battle with Cardinals hurler Daniel Ponce de Leon.
The full 14-pitch AB speaks to Rizzo’s plate discipline, as the Cubs first baseman frequently crowds the plate was does so to live up to his reputation as a slugger with a high on-base percentage when at his best.
Cubs: Chicago was ready for Wrigley Field ‘Opening Day’
With the win, the Cubs moved a half-game ahead of the Brewers, with Milwaukee playing later on Friday night to perhaps even the score with ace Brandon Woodruff on the mound.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, have lost eight of their last ten games. While it’s not panic time yet for Mike Schildt’s group, given the massive expectations before the season, anything short of a division title would be considered a failure unless they made a World Series run via the Wild Card.
Losing the NL Central to the rival Cubs would be considered twisting the knife.
The Cubs deadline plans have changed, folks. And the Wrigley Field fans can feel Jed Hoyer phone ringing off the hook, only to be denied while he watches another fine Cubs win at Wrigley Field.
