The St. Louis Cardinals have dropped from the top of the NL Central, but here’s a quick move they can make to stop their losing streak.

The St. Louis Cardinals have dropped the first two games of their weekend series against the Chicago Cubs, and a loss Sunday night would drop them six games behind the Cubs in the NL Central. The Cardinals have lost eight of their last 10 and 10 of their last 12 entering Sunday.

The Cardinals are surely in the market for starting pitching between now and the trade deadline at the end of July. But they’ve also scored three runs or less in seven of their last 12 games, so the offense could use some reinforcements too. There’s only so much internal improvement or correction that can or will come.

The Cardinals can make one quick move to stop losing streak

Nolan Gorman entered this year as the MLB.com’s No. 38 prospect in all of baseball, and the third-best prospect in the Cardinals’ system. Baseball Prospectus had him ranked as their 23rd-ranked prospect in all of baseball.

But Gorman had not played above High-A ball before this year, as losing the 2020 minor league season cost him a year of real development. So he landed in Double-A Springfield to start this season, and entering Sunday he’s hitting .328/.401/.588 with 10 home runs and 23 RBI.

With a three-home run game on Saturday, Gorman is having a scorching-hot month of June.

Over 11 games in June thus far, Gorman has a .428/.481/.894 slash-line with seven home runs and 13 RBI over 52 plate appearances (a 13.5 percent home run rate). He talked about what has spurred his power surge.

“A little minor adjustment getting the ball up in the air to the right side, driving the ball to the left side and being a complete hitter. Being on time is what we preach here in Springfield,”

As the Cardinals explore who’s out there on the starting pitching market, a quicker move to help reverse their recent losing ways is waiting down at Double-A.
