The Dallas Cowboys are looking to get back to the top of the NFC East, and in order to do so, they need Trevon Diggs to step up in 2021.

During the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs with the No. 51 overall pick in the second round. After a career with the Crimson Tide that saw him earn All-SEC honors, as well as win a national title, Diggs was one of the premier cornerbacks coming out that year.

The brother of Buffalo Bills star Stefon Diggs, Trevon was seen as a can’t-miss talent coming out of Alabama and put together a solid rookie campaign. Outside of him breaking his foot and missing time, Diggs started 11 of his 12 games, nabbed three interceptions, and had an impressive 14 passes defended.

While that was a good rookie season, Diggs will need to step up even more if the Cowboys want to win their first NFC East title since 2018.

Cowboys need a big second season from Diggs

Just as they did with Diggs in 2020, the Cowboys selected a cornerback in the second round in 2021, bringing in Kelvin Joseph from Kentucky. With both Diggs and Joseph expected to start, the second-year corner will not only have to have an impact on the field but also off of it, as he showed Joseph the ropes at the NFL level.

The Cowboys focused big-time on the defensive side of the ball in the draft, bringing in Micah Parsons, a linebacker from Penn State in the first round, who was one of five defensive draft picks in 2021. Dallas has serious issues on defense last season, and will also benefit from having defensive coordinator Dan Quinn join the staff this season after a stint as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Based on the current roster, the Cowboys certainly have enough talent to make a play for the NFC East title this season. This is a division that has not had a repeat winner since the Philadephia Eagles won four straight from 2001 through 2004, so it is definitely going to be up for grabs again in 2021.
