Five days after blanking Turkey 3-0 to open the UEFA European Championship, Italy take on Switzerland on Wednesday at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

The Italians, who need a win to advance to the knockout stage, look to be the tougher side after the Swiss could only muster a 1-1 draw in their Group A encounter against Wales.

The Azzurri hope that striker Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne can remain consistent and find the scoresheet once again after both got goals in the win against Turkey.

Manager Roberto Mancini has assembled a team focused primarily on youth, although the backline features veterans Giorgio Chiellini, who is also the team captain, and Leonardo Bonucci.

“We play soccer now, as the coach has asked us to, and that’s the thing that has changed most over these last few years under Mancini,” Bonucci said after Italy’s win.

The Italians are now unbeaten in 28 straight matches and have scored an average of 2.5 games per game since Mancini took over after they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. In their last nine games, Italy have scored 28 goals and conceded none. Add to that the home support and Italy look hard to beat.

Those are daunting stats for the Swiss to overcome. Led by striker Haris Seferovic and attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, Switzerland have a quality roster with players who can both create and finish.

Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic said he hopes his side can build on their performance against Wales as they look to also advance to the knockout stage.

“We certainly created many chances [against Wales]. We perhaps should have finished off one or two of them. It’s disappointing, but we’re not too displeased with our performance,” he told reporters. “Against Italy, it will be a very different match.”
