The Tampa Bay Rays will be without starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow for the foreseeable future.

Tampa Bay Rays fans are not going to like hearing the latest injury news regarding the health of their frontline starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Glasnow has a partial UCL tear and a flexor strain in his throwing arm. This was revealed during an MRI the Rays starting pitcher had up in Chicago after Monday night’s game vs. the Chicago White Sox. Tampa Bay might have the best record in baseball at 43-24, but they could be without Glasnow for the rest of the season now.

How much of an impact will losing Glasnow be on the defending American League champions?

Tampa Bay Rays: Tyler Glasnow’s latest injury update provides terrible news

Glasnow is 5-2 on the season with a 2.66 ERA in 14 starts for the Rays. Despite losing Charlie Morton to the Atlanta Braves in free agency and trading away Blake Snell to the San Diego Padres this offseason, Tampa Bay still holds a three-game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Even with an incredibly small payroll, Tampa Bay regularly finds a way to field a competitive team.

While it will almost certainly be next man up in the Tampa Bay rotation, losing Glasnow for potentially the season further caps their already limited ceiling. Though Tampa Bay can still win the AL East again, the Rays may not have enough firepower to beat fellow contending teams like the White Sox or the Oakland Athletics should they meet them in the ALDS or the ALCS in October.

Though it is not a foregone conclusion, Glasnow is heading towards having Tommy John surgery.
