Mets ace Jacob deGrom leaves start against Cubs with concerning injury
New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was perfect through three innings against the Chicago Cubs, but had to leave the game with an injury.
It’s time for Mets fans to start holding their breath, again.
Ace Jacob deGrom had to leave Wednesday’s start against the Cubs after three innings of outstanding play because of an apparent injury.
The pitcher appeared uncomfortable after a pitch in the third inning.
New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is hurting again
After the inning ended, he went straight to the clubhouse and was replaced in the fourth by Sean Reid-Foley.
The Mets described the issue as “right shoulder soreness,” per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
DeGrom had been perfect with eight strikeouts against nine batters. He also had an RBI in the second inning on a single to shallow right field. Reid-Foley promptly gave up a home run to Anthony Rizzo, cutting the Mets lead to 3-1.
This is the second straight start deGrom has had to leave prematurely. He pitched six scoreless innings against the Padres before leaving the game with right flexor tendonitis.
Whatever is going on with deGrom, it’s a huge worry for New York as they look to retain their lead in the NL East. At least they have a five-game lead over the Phillies in second place. Having their talisman in the pitching staff is essential to their hopes for the postseason.
This season, deGrom has maintained an ERA of 0.56 with a 6-2 record in 10 starts. However, he’s dealt with injuries for some of the campaign. He missed two weeks with tightness in his lower back and side in May.
The important thing is for deGrom not to injure himself further by continuing to pitch when there’s something off with his body.
