The shadow was cast over the Euros this past Saturday when Denmark midfielder Christen Eriksen suffered a health scare during their match against Finland.

What happened next was emotional minutes, with the Denmark team doctor later saying Eriksen was “gone.” 

“And we did cardiac resuscitation. And it was cardiac arrest,” said team doctor Morten Boesen. “How close were we? I don’t know. We got him back after one defib. That’s quite fast.”

Eriksen continues to recover in a Copenhagen hospital, while his teammates continue to train ahead of their Group B clash against Belgium at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Denmark lost to Finland 1-0, while Belgium defeated Russia 3-0, solidifying its status as one of the teams favored to win the Euros.

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand said when he spoke to Eriksen, the Inter Milan midfielder was more concerned about his teammates’ well-being than his own.

“He said ‘I don’t remember much but I’m more concerned about you guys. How are you doing?’” Hjulmand said. ”That’s typical Christian.”

How Denmark will be able to go on without Eriksen remains to be seen. The players could either be motivated to play for him or they will wilt under the emotional pressure of it all. Striker Martin Braithwaite will need to perform at a high level, although he has criticized UEFA for allowing the game against Finland to resume.

Belgium, after all, is a tough side. Led by striker Romelu Lukaku, who is teammates with Eriksen at Inter, bagged two goals against Russia and will be called on once again to score more goals. A Belgium win would put them through to the knockout stage.

The No. 1-ranked team in the world by FIFA suffered a setback this past weekend when Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said on the eve of the game that defender Timothy Castagne will miss the rest of the tournament after suffering a double fracture to his right eye socket against Russia.

Castagne was forced off the field after clashing heads with Russia midfielder Daler Kuzyaev while going for the ball midway through the first half.
