Jacob deGrom injury: Lack of DH potentially to blame for shoulder issue
By Scott Rogust
New York Mets manager Luis Rojas says batting “could be” to blame for pitcher Jacob deGrom’s shoulder issue.
Wednesday night featured another night of dominance for New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom, albeit for three innings. After striking out eight of nine batters faced and knocking in a run, deGrom ultimately left the game with right shoulder soreness. The Mets did receive good news on Thursday, as an MRI revealed deGrom’s shoulder was clean and will not be placed on the injured list just yet.
But what exactly caused the soreness is what everyone is wondering. While speaking with the media on Thursday, Mets manager Luis Rojas stressed that they are not sure what caused deGrom’s injury issues this season, but they are not ruling out batting as a potential reason, via Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News.
Mets: Team unsure what caused Jacob deGrom’s shoulder soreness
Again, the Mets are unsure what exactly caused deGrom’s shoulder issue, but they are not ruling out hitting as a cause. They are simply exploring all options.
This is not the only injury that the ace has dealt with this season. deGrom dealt with right side tightness back in May, which resulted in a stint on the injured list, and elbow soreness this past Friday. All of these ailments happened during his starts and forced him out of each game.
deGrom has not only been dominant on the mound, but also in the batter’s box. Through his 11 starts, deGrom is slashing .423/.423/.462 while recording four runs scored, six RBI and 11 hits.
While the Mets plan on taking things day-by-day with deGrom, it is important to note that the pitcher was spotted playing catch in the outfield on Thursday prior to the team’s game against the Chicago Cubs. The team knows that any chance they have at clinching a postseason berth and eventually making a deep run is all dependent on deGrom being at full health. Hence why the team is taking every precaution and will look to see if he will need another stint on the injured list, or if he will be good to go for his next scheduled start.
