5 teams that should hire Rick Carlisle as next head coach right now
By John Buhler
Be the reason Giannis Antetokounmpo wins his first NBA Finals with Milwaukee
Let’s be completely honest with ourselves for just one second. While the Milwaukee Bucks do not have an opening yet, you have to believe head coach Mike Budenholzer will get fired if they do not get past the Brooklyn Nets in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. He was supposed to be the head coach to get two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to the NBA Finals and has not done it.
Down 3-2 to the Nets in their best-of-seven series, Budenholzer and Carlisle could potentially swap places, as Bud would surely love to go from coaching one superstar in Antetokounmpo to another in Doncic. Carlisle has already won an NBA Finals with his best player being a big in Dirk Nowitzki. While Antetkounmpo does not shoot like Nowitzki, this would be a very appealing job.
It has to be too hard to pass up coaching a team you used to play for
As soon as Carlisle resigned from the Mavericks job, the first one that people connected him to was the Boston Celtics vacancy. His potential predecessor would be his new boss in Brad Stevens, who replaces Danny Ainge as the president of basketball operations. Boston is in dire need of a former NBA player as its head coach. Guess what? Carlisle played for the Celtics in the 1980s.
While he may not be anywhere close to the former star NBA player of someone like Chauncey Billups or Jason Kidd, Carlisle won an NBA Championship as a player with the Celtics in 1986 and another title leading the Mavericks in 2011. He will carry enough clout to help this young core of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum take that next step as basketball team and get back to the finals.
With so many options, what team should Carlisle want to be the next head coach of the most?
