Liverpool identify the right young striker target to build around
Liverpool want to inject some much-needed youth into their attack force this summer. Signing Alexander Isak would do just that for Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool officials correctly understand that the trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino are starting to get a bit long in the tooth. That means it’s time to add a young striker to the attacking corps at Anfield. The Premier League giants believe Alexander Isak is the ideal summer addition.
If Liverpool do want to land the Sweden international they’ll need to fend off several English rivals. Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested in the Real Sociedad striker. Isak has a £65 release clause in his current contract and it’s unclear whether or not his current club are willing to accept a lesser offer.
Isak has the pace required to thrive in Jurgen Klopp’s high pressing system. He primarily plays centrally at Real Sociedad but there’s no reason to think he couldn’t also soak up minutes out wide at Liverpool. Whatever he lacks in bulk he more than makes up for in pace and quickness.
Can Liverpool afford Alexander Isak?
It’s difficult to envision Liverpool sanctioning a £65 bid for Isak without making some surprising sales this summer. Divock Origi should be sold, but any proceeds from that transaction will only cover a fraction of Isak’s potential cost.
The best chance Liverpool have of completing an Isak deal is if the Sweden striker makes a fuss about wanting to leave Real Sociedad on the back of a strong EURO 2020 performance. Public comments from Isak might be enough to convince his club to lower their potential asking price to something in Liverpool’s price range.
If Real Sociedad are willing to come off their original asking price at all then Liverpool should jump ahead of their Premier League competitors to get a deal done. He’s tailor-made for Klopp’s system and still has plenty of development ahead of him. Completing a quick deal for the 21-year-old hitman could turn into a stroke of genius for Klopp and his staff this summer.
