The Stanford Cardinal and the North Carolina State Wolfpack will play in the first game of the 2021 College World Series.

The College World Series is officially back!

A global pandemic put an end to the 2020 NCAA baseball season well before anyone was able to get into their conference tournament, let alone the NCAA baseball tournament, so it’s been a little while since we’ve gotten to see eight of the best baseball teams in the country compete for a national championship.

To get things started in the 2021 CWS, the Stanford Cardinal and the North Carolina State Wolfpack will play on Saturday. The Cardinal and the Wolfpack each earned a considerable amount of respect in their Super Regionals to get to this point, so it’s fitting that they face each other.

North Carolina State is a true underdog for the College World Series. The Wolfpack didn’t get the chance to host a regional and instead had to go play in the Ruston Regional. But NC State had no issue handling its foes there as the Wolfpack beat Alabama 8-1 before handling Louisiana Tech in back-to-back games, winning 8-3 and 14-7.

NC State then went on to Fayetteville where the Wolfpack faced the No. 1 national seed, the Arkansas Razorbacks. The first game went horribly for North Carolina State as Arkansas won 21-2. But, in back-to-back elimination games, North Carolina State came out on top of a remarkably talented team, winning 6-5 and 3-2. This team was able to upset its Regional host and its Super Regional host. Now it’s looking to claim a national title.

Meanwhile, the Stanford Cardinal arrive in Omaha after handily winning the Lubbock Super Regional. Against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Cardinal found an easy foe. Stanford went in to Lubbock and defeated Tech by a combined score of 24-3 in just two games. The team had no issue taking to the road to get those easy wins.

And before that, Stanford won its own Regional with relative ease. Stanford beat North Dakota State 9-1 and then took two of three from an upstart UC Irvine team that didn’t want to go home without a fight.

And now the Cardinal and the Wolfpack will get things started in Omaha. Get to ESPN on Saturday to watch the game.
