The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Arizona Wildcats will square off on the first day of the 2021 College World Series.

One of the best teams from the SEC will get the opportunity to face off against one of the best teams from the Pac-12 in Omaha. The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Arizona Wildcats will meet in the second game of the College World Series after NC State and Stanford wrap up game 1.

The Commodores will be in Omaha defending their national title. Given that there wasn’t a 2020 College World Series because of the coronavirus pandemic, Vanderbilt is the defending national champ. The Commodores claimed the 2019 College World Series and have a talented roster that looks to do the same again in 2021.

Arizona, meanwhile, is making its first appearance in Omaha since the Wildcats were the runner-up in 2016 when they fell to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Arizona is trying to win its first title since 2012 and is being asked to get through a formidable foe in the Commodores to get that championship bid started. That’s a tough first test, but the Wildcats might just have the offense to get through it.

To make it to the 2021 College World Series, Vanderbilt had to get through a couple of tough tests. In the Nashville Regional, Vandy won its first game 10-0, but then got challenged by Georgia Tech. The Commodores were able to come out on top 4-3 in the first game but then had to go extra innings to beat the Yellow Jackets a second time, a game they ultimately won 14-11 in 11 innings.

The Commodores were then challenged by the East Carolina Pirates. But, like in the Nashville Regional, Vanderbilt did not fall in the Nashville Super Regional. The Commodores won 2-0 and 4-1 to advance on to Omaha.

Arizona’s road to Omaha was a little more of a roller coaster. The Tucson Regional went smoothly as the Wildcats beat Grand Canyon 12-6 and then handed UC Santa Barbara a 4-0 loss followed by a 5-2 loss. After winning the Regional with ease, Arizona then faced off against Ole Miss, which made for an interesting Super Regional.

The Tucson Super Regional featured three blowout games. Luckily for Arizona, they were on the winning side of two of those games. The Wildcats won game 1 by a score of 9-3, lost game 2 by a score of 12-3, and then won game 3 by a score of 16-3.
