The New York Mets completely owned the Washington Nationals on Twitter right after Francisco Lindor owned them at the plate … twice.

The Washington Nationals made a huge mistake trying to troll the New York Mets on Twitter before Saturday afternoon’s NL East rivalry game.

Prior to first pitch on Saturday, the Nationals decided to dig at the Mets over who has the better shortstop using a meme from The Office. Washington has an excellent shortstop in Trea Turner, but the Mets have Francisco Lindor, who promptly hit a pair of homers in the game immediately following this ill-advised tweet by the Nationals account. Oh, how the turntables have turned…

This was not the most awkward thing to happen involving Michael Scott, nor will it be the last.

New York Mets destroy Washington Nationals on Twitter after The Office meme

Entering play on Saturday, the Mets held a seven-game lead over the Nationals in the NL East standings. New York leads the division with a strong 36-27 record. Only two years removed from winning the 2019 World Series, the Nationals are heading towards a potential rebuild. They are in fourth place in the lousy NL East with a dismal, sub-.500 record of only 31-36 on the season.

While there is nothing wrong with the Nationals arguing for their shortstop over the Mets’, it is downright hilarious when the other team’s shortstop goes to town all over their pitching staff. This is just the latest example of one professional sports team’s Twitter account getting owned by another. One day soon, the Nationals may be able to own the Mets, but today is not that day.

Lindor laid to waste the Nationals’ meme from The Office with two swings of the baseball bat.
