Tony Vitello and the Tennessee Vols are looking to continue their magical season as they face Brian O’Connor and the Virginia Cavaliers in the College World Series.

Things have been going great for the Tennessee baseball program this year. The Volunteers are reaching unprecedented heights with Tony Vitello and are looking like a team that could legitimately compete for a championship this season. Vitello and the Vols have been working hard to turn their program around and things have really paid off this season.

Brian O’Connor and the Virginia Cavaliers are finally back in Omaha (O’Connor’s hometown) for the first time since they won the College World Series in 2015. A couple of weeks ago, the Cavaliers didn’t appear to be as dominant as some of the other teams that have made it to the College World Series.

But UVA got hot in the Columbia Regional and has let that momentum carry it to Omaha. Now the Cavaliers to get play the Tennessee Volunteers, a team that is also riding a ton of momentum at the moment.

Virginia has certainly demonstrated that it is resilient as the Cavaliers have had to fight and claw their way to the College World Series. The Cavaliers lost the first game of the Columbia Regional, falling to South Carolina 4-3. They then turned around and beat Jacksonville 13-8, South Carolina 3-2, and then the top seed, Old Dominion 8-3 and then 4-3 in 10 innings.

From there, Virginia faced the Dallas Baptist Patriots and dropped the first game, losing 6-5. But, the Cavaliers bounced back and beat the Patriots in the next two games, winning 4-0 and then 5-2 to eliminate DBU.

The Volunteers haven’t struggled like Virginia has this postseason. Sure, there have been a couple close games, but Tennessee has an unblemished record in the NCAA Baseball Tournament so far. The Vols beat Wright State 9-8 in a game that was closer than many fans would’ve appreciated, but then beat Liberty 9-3 and 3-1 to win the Knoxville Regional.

Then against the LSU Tigers in the Knoxville Super Regional, Tennessee continued to thrive. The Vols beat the Tigers 4-2 in game 1 and then sent Paul Mainieri into retirement by beating LSU 15-6 in game 2.
