Re-sign Danny Green

Among the many things that went wrong for this Sixers, the play of Danny Green was not among them.

Green was a glowing bright spot for Philadelphia this entire season, and if the Sixers want to find a wining formula to finally make the process work then he needs to be a part of things moving forward.

At one point in the season, Green’s fit next to the Embiid and Simmons was almost seamless, coming in at +12.5 per 100 possessions when the three shared the floor according to Basketball Reference. The weak link in the equation seems to be Simmons, and there’s a decent chance that he’ll be moved this summer at the first good offer the Sixers are able to field.

But Green needs to stay, and Philly should make re-signing him a top offseason priority.

Where things get complicated is the Sixers cap situation. Philadelphia has massive amounts of money tied up in the three of contracts of Simmons, Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris. Trading Simmons will help, but there are ways to fir Green into the books even of that doesn’t happen.

Luckily for the Sixers, they own Danny Green’s Early Bird Rights, which means that Philly can go above the salary cap to re-sign him this offseason. His contract will be pricey but won’t be outrageous, as something along the lines of $20-$23 million on a 2-3 year deal sounds about right.

Given how much better the Sixers were with Green on the floor, and how important he is to a potential championship lineup, bringing him back could essentially pay for itself if the end result is that elusive NBA Championship.
