Carlo Ancelotti is ready to raid his old club to aid his Real Madrid revival. Everton may be powerless to keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

Everton fans still suffering from the sting of losing Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid may need to brace for another blow. The venerable manager is hatching plans to lure Toffees’ striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Spain in the coming weeks.

According to reports in The Sun, Everton may be tempted to acquiesce to a move due to their own financial difficulties. A transfer bid of £50 million might be enough to clinch a deal. That’s below Calvert-Lewin’s market value, but the reality that Everton have lost £240 million over the past two years might force them to the negotiating table.

Parting with the 24-year-old striker would be a crushing blow to Everton’s hopes of climbing up the Premier League table in the near future. He scored 16 goals in 33 appearances under Ancelotti last season and showed signs of becoming one of the best strikers in Europe. His departure from Goodison Park would leave the Toffees without a quality starting No. 9.

The mild surprise regarding this transfer saga is that Ancelotti seems to be prioritizing a move for Calvert-Lewin instead of James Rodriguez. The Colombian attacking midfielder moved from Real Madrid to Everton to reunite with Ancelotti. A stunning reunion with the Spanish giants would seem to tick a lot of boxes for all involved.

What should Everton do?

The key for the Toffees is to make sure they don’t rush things regarding Calvert-Lewin. In a perfect world, they could resist all bids for their star striker this summer. Their financial issues may force them to sell him to the highest bidder.

The key phrase there is “highest bidder.” Calvert-Lewin might be keen on reuniting with Ancelotti at a big club like Real Madrid, but Everton are under no obligation to grant him his ideal move. Instead, they should conduct an auction open to all European clubs in need of a striker to make sure they maximize their return for Calvert-Lewin. It’s very possible another club will be willing to pay significantly more than the £50 million quoted in recent reports.

Parting with Calvert-Lewin will be painful for Everton no matter where he goes, but they need to make the best of a bad situation. Letting him go on a cut-rate deal would turn a bad situation into an unmitigated disaster.
