Tottenham’s managerial date has been a complete farce to date. “Settling” for Graham Potter could be a massively lucky break for Spurs.

Daniel Levy’s mismanagement of Tottenham’s managerial search should have his job in jeopardy. That doesn’t mean it won’t work out well for Spurs in the end. In fact, ending up with Graham Potter could turn into a massive stroke of luck for Levy and the decision-makers at Tottenham.

According to Ian Abrahams, Tottenham have narrowed their search down to just two candidates. Potter and former Watford boss Nuno Espirito Santo are the two finalists. In fairness, the way this search has been handled it’s always possible more names could be added to the queue at any moment.

If taken at face value, that should result in a pretty easy choice for Tottenham. Potter managed to keep Brighton in the Premier League this season while playing a progressive, attractive style of football that attracted admirers all across Europe.

Nuno, in sharp contrast helped Wolves punch above their weight for the past several years with a disciplined brand of counterattacking football. The style fit his club’s personnel perfectly, but it would only remind Spurs supporters of the sort of tactics they recently endured under Jose Mourinho. It’s hard to really imagine Tottenham casting their lot with another stodgy, defensive-minded manager again so quickly.

Critics of Potter will question how a manager of a side that barely avoided Premier League relegation could possibly be qualified to take over a side with legitimate Champions League aspirations. The simple truth is that Potter’s squad lacked the talent to do anything more in such a competitive league.

In particular, it would be fascinating to see how Potter’s system could flourish with the talent of one of England’s best strikers at the point of its attack. Harry Kane lacked service for long stretches of last season in Mourinho’s conservative system. He could be in line for a massive campaign in Potter’s system if he does stay put in North London.

Will Graham Potter be Tottenham’s next manager?

If Levy gets over his desire to win the press conference by hiring a big name then Potter should be installed as Tottenham’s next manager in fairly short order. The club will need to compensate Brighton for his services, but it’s a potential price well worth paying for Spurs.

The presence of Fabio Paratici as the club’s newly installed director of football may throw a wrench into talks with Potter. The Italian has seemed been to bring in a fellow Italian to serve as the club’s manager over the last few weeks. Ironically, club officials need to make sure Potter shouldn’t be discriminated against due to his English background.

Tottenham fans should keep a very close eye on news connecting Potter to the club’s managerial vacancy in the coming hours. It would be no surprise to see a deal come together very quickly.
