2021 NBA Draft Lottery: Who should each team take with the No. 1 pick?
By Ian Levy
The Spurs are a true wild card and if there was any team that could offer a creative curveball and look outside the two-man tier of Mobley and Cunningham, it would be the Spurs. The team is in a transition phase and has some solid building blocks but lacks star power at really any position. Honestly, Cunningham makes just as much sense for the Spurs but I’m leaning (perhaps foolishly) towards a fit approach here.
Putting Mobley with the young backcourt of Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker fills out the rotation in a more complete way and leaves room for Derrick White and Devin Vassell on the wings. If the Spurs do go with Cunningham it might be a sign they’d be ready to explore trades for someone like White or Walker as they look to build out a new, young frontcourt to go with them. Either way, the chances of the Spurs finding themselves with this wonderful problem to solve are fairly slim (a 1.7 percent chance).
